Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert

Sunday, 25th March, 2018 |6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

NEXT CONCERT: 6 pm Sunday 25th March 2018, St. Peter’s Church, Sudbury

Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 5

Gregson: Tuba Concerto in B minor

** Soloist: Christopher Bearman **

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that their next concert will be on Sunday 25th March at 6 pm when we will be featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5 and Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto. Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony was written in 1888 shortly after a long European tour and the symphony is typical of the artistic balance Tchaikovsky struck; it is not explicitly nationalistic, but a distinctively Russian flavor pervades many of the themes. The symphony is a masterpiece of orchestration with its many themes and melodies and with every member of the orchestra feeling that its their instrument that makes the symphony so great. This work is as wonderful to play as it is to listen to.

Tuba concertos are a bit of a rarity when it comes to concert programmes. Vaughan Williams wrote one in 1954, John Williams wronte one in 1985-85, and so did Edward Gregson. Gregson’s tuba concerto for orchestra was written in 1978 following his successful brass band version and is in the traditional three movement concerto pattern. Rhythmic, lyrical and jazz themes all feature in this work which has the assured touch of one of Britain’s most renowned modern composers.

Christopher Bearman is an established musician having graduated from Trinity College of Music in 2009 and in 2010 received a scholarship to study for a post graduate diploma in performance at the Royal College of Music. Since graduating he has performed with various groups of many different styles, having worked with Superbrass, Grimethorpe Colliery Band, at the London Jazz Festival, as a soloist for Malcolm Arnold’s 80 Birthday Concert and live performances on BBC Radios 2 and 3.

All in all a very exciting way to spend a March evening.

Tickets are just £12 for adults (including complimentary concert programme) and £2 for children aged 16 and under. Tickets will be available from the end of February onwards from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury and Sudbury Tourist Information (library).
